I am an Associate Professor of Economics at the Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, a J-PAL Invited Researcher, and an IZA Research Fellow. My research is about how people find work, stay in it, and cope when they lose it.
I run field experiments and large surveys, usually together with governments, firms, and NGOs, to study three things: how jobseekers search and how employers hire, how workers and their families absorb the shock of losing a job and how severance pay can soften it, and how workplace conditions, from the quality of managers to working hours and job security, shape careers and wellbeing.
A second strand of my work looks at political participation and how beliefs about peers and opponents shape it.
Most of my fieldwork is in Ethiopia, South Africa, Kyrgyzstan, China, and Vietnam.

Prospective PhD students
PhD admissions are handled centrally by Peking University and Guanghua. I cannot independently admit PhD students or issue acceptance letters.
Mainland Chinese undergraduates should check the academic summer camp notice on Guanghua's graduate admissions notices page (usually published in May for next years' intake). Mainland Chinese applicants with a master's degree should watch the same page for the 申请—考核制 PhD admissions notice (usually published in October for next years' intake).
For international applicants with a bachelor's degree, the Research Master (Pre-doctoral) programme is the entry route into Guanghua's five-year PhD track.
